Heading West

I always quote it as 4 minutes for every one degree west, someone I know quotes it as an hour for every 15 degrees but the upshot is the same... the further west you go, the earlier it gets. not quite back as far as the day before. Hawaii isn't that far from the international date line but one wouldn't want to end up in the same situation. as Samoa which moved to the other side of the date line in 2011 , leaving American Samoa on the day before as it did so.
Still 10 hours behind is a fair amount of messing with your brain and your sleep patterns. I seem to spend a lot of time in Hawaii awake in the dark!!

Now the actual flying time is about 18 hours in total without a stop on the East coast of the USA With a stop on the East coast it goes up to 20 hours but you can't do the whole trip in one day.... time stretches in a sort of Gin fuelled Dr Who time warp so a 34 hour day appears before you.

Al was asleep before take off to LAX, me getting him up a 5 am in Dublin had taken its toll and he had to be woken up when each course of the meal was served and fell asleep between courses... he did manage to eat some of it and the chocolae desert which I had my eye on if he didnt wake up!!.
